Electrochemist / Electrochemical Engineer

About the Role

Parallel Carbon is searching for an enthusiastic and experienced Electrochemist or Electrochemical Engineer motivated to reverse climate change and help us scale our technology. You will lead the development and optimization of the electrochemical component of our technology, working closely with the CTO. The ideal candidate will have expertise in electrochemical processes and characterisation, with a focus in water electrolysis, process scale-up and process automation and/or commercialization. You will play a crucial role in accelerating technology development and Parallel Carbon’s impact. The position is based in Manchester, UK.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and build water electrolysers, testing different architectures, electrode materials and operational variables to maximise performance, with a focus on scale-up and commercialization

  • Develop and implement process control strategies to optimise electrolyser operation and ensure consistent efficiency and quality

  • Conduct experiments to validate process design and assess the performance using electrochemical characterisation techniques

  • Prepare technical reports, white papers, and presentations to communicate results and progress to the team and stakeholders

  • Identify opportunities for innovation and process improvements, including from interviews and literature reviews, to continuously improve Parallel Carbon’s technology. Investigate and analyse new materials, equipment, processes and engineering practices

  • Develop an intellectual property management plan consistent with business strategy

  • Maintain the highest standards of safety through effective process design and proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials to prevent potential harm to employees and the environment

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team, including material scientists, process engineers, and other engineers to troubleshoot and resolve process issues

  • Build and lead a team of engineers dedicated to the development and scale-up of electrochemical processes within Parallel Carbon’s technology

Requirements

  • Degree in Electrochemistry, Electrochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in water electrolyser design, development, and optimisation

  • Advanced knowledge and experimental experience on electrode characterization, electro-catalysis, water electrolysis (HER and OER), and electrochemical energy technology development

  • Strong ability to analyze and solve complex technical problems related to process design, root cause analysis, and optimization

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to present ideas, design specifications, and progress updates. Fluent in written and spoken English.

  • Experience managing solo and team projects, setting project goals, and ensuring project timelines and budgets are met

  • Team player with an ability to work in fast paced and ambitious environment
